Top 10 things I want to do in Montenegro this summer

Jul 12, 2019travel

I am getting ready for an (almost!) month-long trip to Kotor soon. Sunshine, sun and a simple summer!  Here are the top 10 things I want to do in Montenegro this summer. You might like to try some of them too if you are heading that way!

1. Visit Žabljak for a few days

I’m going to escape the fierce heat of the coast for 4 days and go up to the mountains to explore the Durmitor national park. Looks so beautiful.

2. Feast on calamari by the water’s edge

Enjoy calamari – and the view – by the water’s edge at Konoba Maestral on the Lustica peninsula (off the main road towards Radovici). You can’t beat this setting and the fresh fish is to die for. The calamari and mussles are fantastic.

3. Take it slow on a boat trip on Skadar lake

Sit back and enjoy the scenery on a boat trip on Skadar lake to visit a monastery on a little island. I see the company Golden Frog Boat do boat tours, but you can also arrange private boat tours on the lake.

4. Head to the cafe for some writing & people watching

Grab my notebook and pen and go to one of the cafes in Kotor Old Town. Have a cappuccino outside on the terrace while I write, reflect and watch the world go by. (And well, to be honest, after more than 4 days without some alone time I’m not a nice person to be around!)

5. Go paddle boarding at Movida Beach

Go paddle boarding at Movida Beach on the Lustica peninsula. You can hire paddleboards with Sup Montenegro. (They even do paddleboard group tours if you’re feeling like it!) My daughter took to paddleboarding like ducks to water when we tried it for the first time in Korcula a couple of years ago, so it will be fun to do it again.

6. Get a great start to the day with a swim before breakfast

Get up early and walk the 10 minutes from Kotor Old Town to the water’s edge in Dobrota for a short swim on my own before breakfast. Grab some time to myself at the start of the day and get an invigorating burst of exercise to get me going after all that good food and drink the night before. (So far I have never managed to drag myself out of bed early enough to fit this in but I really fancy making the effort to do it this time. I take myself off to the local indoor pool in England for an early morning swim, so I think it would be kind of cool to do a Montenegrin version of this outdoors).

7. Visit Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog Monastery is a beautiful monastery set into the hillside on the road from Nicksic to Podgorica. A feat of engineering. Excited to visit a monastery too. I find them very special places.

8. Have breakfast outside at the friendly Konoba Roma  in Kotor Old Town

Have breakfast on the terrace at the friendly Konoba Roma on Square of Salads in Kotor Old Town. Set myself up for the day with a delicious omelette, fresh bread with local honey and a wake-me-up cappuccino (or two). Yum. (Why does food always taste better outdoors and prepared by someone else?)

9. Visit Plužine & the gorgeous Piva lake in the north

Visit Plužine in the northwestern Montenegro with the gorgeous Piva lake. I’ve not been here before so am excited to discover a new place in Montenegro. I see there’s even another monastery to visit there too appropriately named Piva Monastery!

10. Have a late afternoon swim at Bjelila

And of course, ye olde favourite… have a late afternoon swim at Bjelila and enjoy a cold beer at Villa Kristina watching the sun go down. One of my favourite places. What could be better?
