10 best views in Montenegro that will stop you in your tracks

Oct 18, 2019travel

There’s something about a glorious view, isn’t there?  But it isn’t just that a great view looks good or gives us an amazing photo opportunity. It is so much more than that.  A great view touches our soul. It interrupts our chattering thoughts. It puts things in perspective. Perhaps because it reminds us that nature is vast and we are small. A fantastic view encourages us to stop and pause a while. Reflect on that bigger picture. It can soothe our troubled minds and calm us down. So, here are the 10 best views in Montenegro that have stopped me in my tracks. Some of them I go back to time and time again and they never cease to amaze me. And remind me what a beautiful place this little country is.

1. Best bird’s eye view of Montenegro at Njegoš mausoleum

It is definitely worth doing the long and windy journey up from Kotor to see the view at Njegosi mausoleum. It feels like you’re on top of the world with one of the best panoramic views of Montenegro, including the Bay of Kotor, the sparkling Adriatic and even Lake Skadar on a very clear day. It will truly clear your head and take your breath away all at the same time.

2. Feel the serenity with the view of Sveti Marko Island

Stop at Bogicisi along the road to Plavi Horizonte on the Lustica peninsula and you’ll be able to feast on the most beautiful view of Montenegro’s Kotor Bay. Take in the lush and tranquil islands of Sveti Marko Island and the Island of Flowers (Prevlaka Island) across the calm water dotted with yachts, the spectacular Montenegrin mountains rising in the distance.

3. Simple view of the lush Žabljak countryside

As you approach Žabljak from Nikšić in north Montenegro you’ll find a gentle – almost alpine -landscape unfolding before you. Amid rolling hills green in summer and cloaked with snow in winter, a scattering of wooden houses with peaked rooflines nestle here and there in the countryside. A view of a simple life far away from the rush of the rat race.

4. Best view of the sparkling Adriatic sea from El Rey café

If you’re heading along the lovely coastal road from Tivat to Budva, take an hour (or two) to stop at the El Rey cafe perched precariously on the hillside above Jaz beach. Then take in one of the best views of Montenegro’s coastline.  The broad view of the Adriatic and the curve of Jaz beach below willl feel like balm to your soul.

5. Best view of spectacular Kotor Bay from the fort

Head up the steps at the back of Kotor Old Town and make the steep climb up to the fort and your efforts will be rewarded with a bird’s eye view of the magnificent Bay of Kotor surrounded by mountains. Take in the patchwork of terracotta rooves of Kotor Old Town and let the far-reaching views help you get your perspective. In more ways than one.

6. Majestic mountains at Durmitor National Park in North Montenegro

There’s a view at every corner when you visit the Durmitor National Park. Here high up in the mountains in northern Montenegro you’ll feel a world away from the holidaymakers on the coast. The vast majority of visitors to Montenegro don’t venture this far inland, so count yourself amongst the lucky few if you get to experience these views. The dramatic and awesome scenery won’t fail to make you stop in wonder.

7. Our Lady of the Rocks and beyond at Virige65 restaurant

The road from north to south Montenegro takes you on a little car ferry crossing over the bay for your onward journey to Tivat. But if you drive a little further on rather than taking the ferry, you will be treated to the beautiful view down the bay of Kotor at Verige65 restaurant. Sitting at the narrowest point, the restaurant is a fantastic viewing point for the impressive Kotor Bay with Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks, right down to Kotor. You may even get to marvel at one of the massive cruise ships manoeuvring through the tiny gap!

 8. One of the best views of Lake Skadar from the road

Drive along the road from seaside town Bar to Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, and you’ll find it hard not to stop on the road that passes over Lake Skadar. This enormous lake stretches far into the horizon to meet Albania in the south. Dotted with little tour boats quietly lacing through the water lillies, it’s not a view you’ll want to rush away from.

9. Stumble across the best view of inland Slansko Lake on the road to Nikšić

As you drive along the road from Risan inland to Nikšić, make sure you pull in off the road by the little stall selling local honey and linger a while over the breath-taking view of Slansko Lake. With tiny little green islands dotted over it and mountains stretching across the wide horizon, this tranquil lake is truly an unexpected delight for the eyes.

10. Montenegrin coastline from Ploče beach club

Get a chance to look down the beautiful coastline of Montenegro from the vantage point of Ploče Beach club. Located on a piece of land jutting out into the sea, Ploce gives you a little visual taste of paradise with its sweeping view down the coast. Catch the most magical time when the beach-goers have gone home and you can watch the sun lower over the mountains, reflect a moment and count your blessings.

Who would’ve thought such a little country like Montenegro could give you so many great views?

Now you just need to go see them for yourself.
