6 homes to inspire you to start a new life in Montenegro
Have you ever dreamt of wiping the slate clean and starting a new life abroad? There’s probably many of you who have been somewhere on holiday and found yourself wondering “what if…?” Well, the what-ifs can be made possible, but you may have to start thinking outside the box. So to help you, I’ve compiled my list of 6 homes to inspire you to start a new life in Montenegro.
I’m obsessed with property and property in Montenegro (my other long-held passion) sends me positively shooting through the roof. The thing is it’s not just an interior design thing. I am fascinated with what a home can offer in terms of a lifestyle. I believe the place and the environment we live in is able to encourage – or hinder – us in the life we long to live.
So, here are 6 homes that each have something different to offer.
1. Affordable new life in a river house at Ada Bojana
What about waking up to a riverside view every morning. Start the day slowly on your very own deck, drinking fresh coffee and watching the small boats drift by. A river home on Ada Bojana in the most southern tip of Montenegro by the Albanian border promises a simple, rustic new life far from the madding crowd.
Who said you need to be rich to have your dream lifestyle?
2. A Bjelila boathouse for a new waterside life in Montenegro
Of course, this had to be in my top 6 homes in Montenegro! What’s not to love about waking up to the sound and the sight of the sea 4 metres from your bed? You’re going to have to dig a bit deeper to buy your boathouse in Montenegro, but it is a lifestyle that is very hard to resist.
You will be able to pop over to Tivat in your small motor boat to stock up on provisions. Join the holiday makers in summer for a dip in the calm clear waters of the Bay of Kotor – just jump in from your terrace! Watch the sun go down from your balcony over a glass of wine.
In winter the place will go quiet as the restaurant closes for the season and the tourists depart. But all your need to do is stoke up the log burner and simply enjoy the peace and beauty of your very own retreat by the sea.
3. New simple life in a wooden mountain cabin in North Montenegro
If you’re the sort of person that gets fired up with the peace and quiet of the countryside and mountains, then what about a wooden cabin near Durmitor National Park in the north of Montenegro?
Enjoy the sun in summer with swimming in one of the many lakes, and the snow and skiing in winter. This is the perfect spot for a sustainable lifestyle with plenty of outdoor activity, fresh air and hearty food.
It’s only 2 hours 15 minutes from Podgorica airport in the good weather, so close enough for the relatives to visit – although many villages can get cut off during the winter. Worth considering if you truly want an escape from the rat race.
4. Be part of the action with a Podgorica city pad
Podgorica has all the facilities you will need for your latest digital project or entrepreneurial idea. Although it still has the feel of an ex-socialist city in parts with its old Yugoslav tower blocks, it is seeing considerable developments everywhere with luxury new-build apartments and an ever-broadening offer of shops.
There is a range of very affordable property to choose from as it is not competing with the tourist destinations elsewhere. So, whether you want a retro Yugoslav flat to make your own, or something a little more upmarket along the tree-lined Boulevard Svetog Petra Cetinjskog, there’s plenty to choose from.
And when you fancy a little relief from work at the weekend, you can still hop on a train and be in Bar in 50 minutes for a dip in the Adriatic.
5. A new life with a seaside rental property in Sutomore
If you are looking for a way to generate an income while living a slower pace life by the sea, then you could consider buying 2 homes in 1. Cash in on the throngs of holidaymakers that descend on Sutomore in the south coast of Montenegro near Bar.
Own a home in Montenegro that could bring in an income too. And for less than the price of a tiny terraced house in Telford.
That’s less than a tiny terraced house in Telford.
6. Apartment life within the walls of Kotor Old Town
Wake up to the gentle stirrings of a town preparing for the day. Walk to a local bakery for fresh bread in the mornings. Choose from one of the many cafes tucked away in the rabbit warren of little streets and relax with your morning cappuccino and some people watching.
An apartment in romantic Kotor Old Town gives you a taste of the “Mediterranean life-style” where you’ll find even the washing hanging from the upper floor windows looks beautiful. An inspirational life in a sort of Hemingway way.
Here you pass through the evolving seasons; from the buzz of summer with the crowds of tour groups to the gentle quiet of the mild winters, where you blend in with the locals as you all relax and catch your breath.
Ahhh … now doesn’t that sound good?
