Montenegro’s new town. What’s Lustica Bay really like?

May 10, 2019travel

I have been avidly following the development of Lustica Bay from a distance for some years now. I fell in love with the staggeringly beautiful and unspoilt area of Montenegro called the Lustica peninsula the very first time I came to the country in 2005. And it is still one of my favourite places to visit whenever I’m in Montenegro.  So, I have been fascinated with the Lustica Bay development ever since hearing of the ambitious plan back in 2011 to create a new self-contained town and marina in this stunning area.

This new town will be home to luxurious villas and apartments, hotels, medical and sports facilities, even a school, by the estimated completion around 2034. Quite a project.  Lustica Bay’s Marina Village opened to the public in August 2018. So as a treat for my birthday in April, I fancied checking out what it was all about (and getting a small taste of luxury amongst the yachting set).

Take the road from Radovici on Lustica peninsula

Over the years I have driven numerous times along the road out from the nearby town Radovici and along the stretch of coastline where development was planned to try and see how work was going. But I never had much success at seeing anything from the public road. And even now that the Marina Village is almost complete, the buildings have been so cleverly tucked into the side of the hillside that from the road you can barely see any development in the beautiful green and unspoilt landscape around it. Design genius, I’d say.

I still can’t believe that the Montenegro I discovered 14 years ago is now mixing in the ranks of such luxury destinations.

From one of the visitor’s car parks there are complimentary buggie rides to take you down to the marina. Great fun and a nice touch.

The Marina Village at Lustica Bay in Montenegro

The Marina Village residences are a lovely mix of designs with beautiful local stone and immaculate attention to detail. Even the services on the roadside are cleverly disguised so they don’t spoil the smart landscaping.

The luxury Chedi Hotel at Lustica Bay

The Chedi Hotel opened in August 2018 and joined the list of the company’s other hotels in elite destinations such as Oman, Bali and the Maldives. I still can’t believe that the Montenegro I discovered 14 years ago is now mixing in the ranks of such luxury destinations.

Lustica Bay: Montenegro new town under construction

There is clearly still work going on in Lustica Bay. The Marina Village is due for completion in the next couple of years and work has already started on Centrale, the town which will be a little further up the hillside and will be home to all the amenities such as a school and medical facilities.

The architecture, the public areas and the bars and cafes by the marina are all top quality. The 21 Bistro SeaView is a relaxing spot to watch the gentle activity in the marina as crews prepare yachts for the summer season.

Although Lustica Bay will obviously take a little time to bed in as work finishes and it gets established, the place has a lovely upmarket vibe that would delight anyone seeking a cocoon-like luxury haven away from it all in one of the most stunning and tranquil places.

I look forward to seeing it progress. If the Marina Village is anything to go by, I am sure they will do a fantastic job.
